How much should a consultant charge?

Hourly rates by experience and specialty, a simple formula for your own rate, and when to switch to project fees or retainers - for independent consultants in the US and Canada.

Quick answer

Consulting rates by experience

ExperiencePublished hourly rate (USD)
New (0-2 years)$50-$10012; $75-$150 entry-level6
Mid-level (3-7 years)$100-$2001
Experienced$150-$3006
Independent management consultants$150-$3504
Partners at major firms$500-$1,000+4

Rates by specialty

Specialty moves your rate as much as experience. A survey of more than 24,000 rates found medians from $108 an hour in operations and supply chain to $171 in AI and data science.3 Technical and regulated fields - IT, data, finance, compliance - sit higher; generalist business advice sits lower unless you have a strong track record in a niche.

The formula: work out your own hourly rate

Indeed's worked example: a $75,000 income goal ÷ 50 weeks ÷ 40 hours = $37.50 an hour, then × 3 = $112.50 an hour.5 The multiplier covers what the hourly figure doesn't: taxes, benefits you now pay yourself, software, insurance, and all the hours you can't bill - sales calls, proposals, admin, and gaps between clients.

The calculator above does the same math with billable hours instead. If you realistically bill 25-30 hours a week, a 2x multiplier on those hours lands close to the 3x-on-40 result.

Hourly, project, retainer or value pricing

A rate card - one page listing your hourly rate, standard packages and retainer options - keeps quotes consistent and shortens sales calls.

Free discovery call or paid strategy session?

Most consultants offer a short free discovery call to qualify the fit, then charge for anything that delivers real advice - a strategy session, an audit, a workshop. Keeping the free call short and focused on the client's problem (not the solution) protects your time and makes the paid session the natural next step.

Consulting rates in Canada

We didn't find a reliable Canada-wide survey of independent consulting rates, so we haven't quoted one. Canadian consultants generally price in CAD from the same principles - experience, specialty and the formula above - and benchmark against local competitors and agencies. The Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation, administered in Canada by CMC-Canada,7 is one credential clients recognize and that can support higher rates.

Quote in CAD before tax and register for GST/HST once your taxable revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. For services, the rate you charge generally depends on where your client is located, and work for clients outside Canada is often zero-rated - check CRA's rules for your situation.

Common questions

How do I price my consulting services?

Start from the formula - target income ÷ working hours × a multiplier for overhead and unbilled time - then check it against rates for your experience and specialty. Indeed's example works out to $112.50 an hour for a $75,000 goal.

What is a reasonable consulting fee?

Most independent consultants charge $75-$500 an hour; new consultants $50-$100 and mid-level $100-$200.

What should a business consultant charge per hour?

Independent management consultants typically charge $150-$350 an hour, with specialized fields like AI and data science carrying higher medians.

Should I charge hourly or by project?

Hourly suits undefined advisory work; project fees suit defined outcomes; retainers suit ongoing support. Many consultants use all three.
